The winters were long and much more severe than they are today. Frances remembers high snow drifts and roads that were difficult to clear. They used horses and buggies and sleds to travel from town to town. "In the winter we always had long underwear, long black stockings, high button shoes and galoshes and gators buttoned all the way up."
