Pearse Farm Museum

On July 17, 2007 about 35 members and friends of the Hope Historical Society gathered in a Pearse barn to view items from past years that were used on the farm. One of the most interesting items was a hand pump made of wood used to water the cows in the fields. William Pearse described the pump and said that it was made of cucumber wood. Someone asked what tree supplied the wood. Answer: A cucumber tree. Laughter from the crowd seemed to say that there was no such thing. The three long narrow items in the center are parts of the pump.

The Cucumber tree, Magnolia acuminata, often spelled as a single word "Cucumbertree", is one of the largest magnolias, and one of the cold-hardiest. It is a large forest tree of the northeastern United States and southeasternmost Canada–(Ontario).
