Staff Sgt. Guilford M. Payson was a ball-turret
gunner in the U.S. Air Force, Unit 376. He received the Presidential Unit
Citation and an Air Medal with six oak leaf clusters while serving his country
WWII. He lived in Hope all his life and served as assistant fire chief of
the Hope Volunteer Fire Dept when it first started. Guilford was also road
commissioner for Hope many years.
